A Chinese company has been ordered to stop selling a product called Viagra after regulators found it was a counterfeit version of the drug.
China’s health ministry said on Thursday it was investigating the case, and that it was investigating the risks.
The drug, which costs about $50 a pill, is a widely used to treat erectile dysfunction, and has been linked to a number of side effects such as vision loss, hearing loss and stomach problems.
“The FDA is taking a responsibility to ensure the safety and effectiveness of these products, and to provide appropriate regulatory oversight and warnings,” the agency said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the pharmaceutical company, Boehringer Ingelheim, said: “We are in a legal fight over the counterfeit Viagra manufactured in China. We are investigating the safety and effectiveness of this product.”
The drug is sold under the brand name Cialis.

In early November, Pfizer said it would launch a clinical trial in China for the drug, which has been linked to several deaths, and it has agreed to sell the counterfeit product for up to 100,000 yuan (US$1,000,000).
Cipla’s shares fell by more than 5 per cent to £1.32 per share on the New York Stock Exchange. Pfizer, which is based in Singapore, also reported a 5 per cent decline.
Pfizer’s shares fell by 5 per cent to £3.90 in early trading on Thursday. The company said it had launched a clinical trial in China in response to the reports, but it said it would continue to sell Pfizer shares.
